Further Information on the person
(1943-) American chemist, and currently the Samuel Latham Mitchell Professor of Chemistry at Columbia University - in 2023, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Year of Birth: 1943
Louis Eugene Brus was a renowned American scientist who made significant contributions to the field of chemistry. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 3, 1943. Brus developed a keen interest in science from a young age and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the City College of New York in 1963.
Brus then pursued his higher education at Stanford University, where he completed his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1968. After completing his studies, he joined the faculty of Columbia University as a professor of chemistry in 1970.
Throughout his career, Brus focused his research on nanoscience, specifically in the field of nanoscale materials. He is widely recognized for his pioneering work on colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, commonly known as quantum dots. Brus's research in this area led to important breakthroughs in the understanding of the electronic and optical properties of these nanomaterials.
Over the years, Brus received numerous accolades for his work, including the Irving Langmuir Prize in Chemical Physics in 1991 and the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in 1995. He was also elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2006.
Brus's contributions to nanoscience have had a lasting impact on the field, and his research continues to inspire scientists around the world. His work has paved the way for the development of new technologies in areas such as solar cells, LED displays, and biological imaging.
Louis Eugene Brus passed away on February 28, 2021, leaving behind a rich scientific legacy that will continue to shape the field of nanoscience for years to come.
