Letter signed, one page, 7,75 x 9,75 inch, Vienna, 1.0.1809, in French, to Henri-Jacques-Guillaume Clarke* - concerning the payment of troops, signed by Eugène de Beauharnais in black ink "Eugène Napoleon", with an addendum from august 16th to the upper left corner, attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a portrait picture of Eugène de Beauharnais in uniform (altogether 16,5 x 11,75 inch), with mild signs of wear - in fine to very fine condition.

"Je vous réviens, Monsieur le chef d'État major Guillaume, [...] des soutributions à Graetz Deux million des florins. Vous veilleres à ce que cette somme soit employée taut au payernent de la Solde qu`avez 40 mille francs accordér par régiment. - Sur ce, Monsieur le chef d`Etat major [...], Je prie Dieu qu'il vous ait en sa sainte garde.

Translated:
"I come back to you, Mr. Chief of Staff Guillaume, [ ...] contributions to Graetz Two million florins. You will ensure that this sum is used to pay the Pay of 40 thousand francs granted per regiment. - With that, Mr. Chief of Staff, I pray to God that he has you in his holy guard.

Eugène Rose de Beauharnais was born in 1781 in Paris, France to an aristocratic family. He was the son of Alexandre de Beauharnais, an important figure in the French Revolution, and Joséphine Tascher de La Pagerie, who later became Empress Joséphine, the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. Eugène was raised in a privileged household and was given a good education. He was an intelligent and talented young man, studying law, history and the military arts.
Eugène was appointed to the position of Viceroy of Italy in 1805, making him the highest-ranking noble in Italy. He was able to modernize the military and the economy of the region, as well as introduce new social reforms. His reforms increased the popularity of Napoleon in Italy, and he was made a Prince of the Empire in 1806.
In 1810, Eugène married Princess Augusta of Bavaria, and they had two children. His son, Eugène de Beauharnais, later became Duke of Leuchtenberg and Grand Duke of Frankfurt, while his daughter, Hortense de Beauharnais, later became Queen of Holland. Eugène and his wife were very supportive of Napoleon's policies and continued to serve him faithfully, even after his defeat in 1814.
After Napoleon's exile, Eugène was able to maintain his position as Viceroy of Italy. He was also instrumental in negotiating a peace treaty between France and Austria in 1815. Eugène was made a Marshal of France in 1817, and he continued to serve the French monarchy until his death in 1824.
Eugène Rose de Beauharnais is remembered as a great diplomat and statesman, as well as a loyal supporter of Napoleon. He was a strong advocate for social reform and a unifying figure in Italy during a tumultuous period in European history. His legacy lives on through his descendants, who continue to serve in various capacities in the French government.
