Boris Karloff was a British actor, best known for his iconic portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster in the 1931 movie Frankenstein. He won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for his performance in The Ghoul, and was nominated for an Academy Award for best actor for Arsenic and Old Lace. He is also known for his roles in The Mummy films, The Black Cat, and The Raven, as well as his voice work as the Grinch in the cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Karloff was married three times, first to Dorothy Stine in 1920, and later to Helena Makowska in 1927. His third wife, Joan Fulton, whom he married in 1945, was his closest companion until his death in 1969. Karloff was the father of a daughter, Mona, who was born in 1940, and a son, Wyndham, who was born in 1947. Mona followed in her father’s footsteps, becoming a successful actress, and Wyndham went on to become a successful businessman.

Karloff was a passionate art collector and was particularly fond of the works of Spanish artist Francisco Goya. He owned several of Goya’s works, including The Colossus, which he donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art after his death.
