Autograph letter signed, one page, 7,75 x 9,75 inch, Berlin, 12.01.1822, in German, letter of condolence to a friend whose father-in-law had died, written and signed in black ink “GrNvGneisenau", attractively mounted (removable) for display with a picture, shows August Neidhardt von Gneisenau on horseback (altogether 16,5 x 11,75 inch), with intersecting letter folds, toning, and mild signs of wear to the edges - in fine condition.

"[...] Er ist also nun hingeschlummert, der gute Patriarch! Der Friede ist mit ihm! Aber die tiefe Betrübnis der ihm Angehörigen muß diejenigen, die seinen Kindern und Enkeln in Achtung, Freundschaft und Wohlwollen zugethan sind, mit tiefem Beileid erfüllen. Mit Recht haben Sie mich unter diese Zahl gerechnet und ich bin Ihnen dafür zu Dank verpflichtet. Möge Gott Ihr Haus vor fernerem Unglück bewahren! Dem Grafen Brühl [wohl Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von B.] ist das Unglück begegnet, daß er beim Heimfahren von der Jagd umgeworfen wurde und das Schlüsselbein ihm gesplittert worden. Er wird sich, nach Dr. Gräfes Aussage, nicht unter 6 Wochen ins Bett legen dürfen [...]"

August Wilhelm Antonius Graf von Gneisenau was born on October 27, 1760 in Schildau, Saxony. He came from a noble Prussian family and was destined for a military career from a young age.
Gneisenau joined the Prussian army in 1777 and quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional leadership skills and strategic thinking. He served in various campaigns and battles, including the War of the Bavarian Succession and the Napoleonic Wars.
One of Gneisenau's most famous achievements was his role in the War of the Sixth Coalition against Napoleon. He served as Chief of Staff to Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher and played a crucial role in the decisive victory at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813.
After the defeat of Napoleon, Gneisenau was appointed as the Prussian Minister of War and implemented numerous reforms to modernize and strengthen the Prussian army. He also played a key role in the formation of the German Confederation.
Gneisenau retired from active service in 1818 but continued to be involved in military and political affairs. He passed away on August 23, 1831 in Posen, Prussia, leaving behind a legacy of military excellence and dedication to his country.
