Description

Letter signed, one page, 7,25 x 9 inch, Paris, 24.03.1812, in French, to the Count of Dorsenne (1773-1812, Chief General of the North Army) - Berthier responds to the request of leave that his correspondent sent on behalf of General of Division Thiebault, signed by Louis Alexandre Berthier in dark ink "Alexandre", attractively mounted (removable) for display with a beautiful picture of Louis Alexandre Berthier (altogether 16,5 x 11,75 inch), with mild signs of wear - in fine to very fine condition.

In parts:
"[...] Je vous préviens que l´intention de l´Empereur est que les services de ce Général soient utilisés à l´Armée du nord de l´Espagne. Donnez-lui une destination et rendez m´en compte."

Translated:
"[...] I warn you that the intention of the Emperor is that the services of this General be used in the Army of northern Spain. Give him a destination and let me know."

On 25 July 1811, Napoleon recalled Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bessières as commander of the Army of the North because of his negative reports of the situation. Dorsenne was Bessières' replacement. By the beginning of 1812 Dorsenne began to suffer from violent headaches, an effect of the severe wound he had received at Essling. He died four months after this letter (July 24, 1812). His name is inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
