Description

Autograph letter signed, two pages (both sides), 5,25 x 8 inch, (Paris), Tuesday evening (18.05.1869), in French, to composer Alexandre Bazille - inter alia concerning the Opéra-Comique, the subject of `Callirhoé` and the tastes and habits of this audience, written and signed in dark ink "G. Sand", attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a photograph, shows George Sand in a half length portrait (altogether 12,5 x 9 inch), with intersecting letter folds, and very mild signs of wear to the edges - in fine to very fine condition.

In parts:

"[...] L’Opéra-Comique a parlé franc. [...]"

Translated:
"[...] The Opéra-Comique spoke frankly. They don't like the subject of Callirhoé. To take it, they want us to change all the seriousness of the drama, that there is no fantasy, that the statue is the young girl in disguise, finally, such nonsense that I find it useless to toil to give them enjoyment to hear the music. They are not that bourgeois, and say very well that they have an audience of grocers - but they are traders, like all theater directors and do not want to risk anything to change the tastes and habits of this audience. They advised me to see Pasdeloup [the conductor was then director of the Théâtre-Lyrique]. What do you say about it ? [...]"
