Tony Curtis was born on June 3, 1925, in the Bronx, New York City as Bernard Schwartz. He was the eldest of three boys in a family of Hungarian Jewish immigrants. Growing up during the Great Depression, Curtis learned to be resourceful and hardworking from a young age.
After serving in the Navy during World War II, Curtis began studying acting at the Dramatic Workshop in New York City. It was there that he discovered his passion for performing and decided to pursue a career in Hollywood.
In 1949, Curtis landed his first film role in the movie "Criss Cross." This led to a contract with Universal Pictures and a string of successful films throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Some of his most notable movies from this era include "Some Like It Hot," "Spartacus," and "Sweet Smell of Success."
Known for his charisma, good looks, and versatility as an actor, Curtis became a popular leading man in Hollywood. He received critical acclaim for his performances and was nominated for numerous awards throughout his career.
Aside from his film career, Curtis was also known for his personal life, which included high-profile marriages to actress Janet Leigh and model Christine Kaufmann. He had six children and was an avid painter in his later years.
