William Somerset Maugham was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was born in Paris in 1874, the son of a lawyer. His mother died when he was young and he was sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitstable. Maugham was educated at King's School, Canterbury and Heidelberg University. He qualified as a doctor in 1897 and then practiced medicine in London. He was never very successful as a doctor and eventually gave it up to pursue a career as a novelist and playwright.
Maugham's first novel was Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897. It was a success and his career as a writer was launched. He then wrote several successful novels including Of Human Bondage (1915) and The Moon and Sixpence (1919). He also wrote a number of plays including The Circle (1921) and East of Suez (1922).
