"Dear friend,
Thank you for the news you were kind enough to give me in your letter of February 1st.
I also received a message from Mr. Coquelin saying that everything is fine. I am at the 34th performance and have acted in ten operas.
I also played Faust in French, receiving great success at the theater, but the press was not happy because I am Italian.
I will write to Mr. Coquelin to thank him for the medal.
Please accept, dear friend, my most distinguished greetings.
   Yours sincerely, Enrico Caruso"

* At that time, Caruso was the undisputed star of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he gave over 600 performances alone.
** Most likely Benoît-Constant Coquelin (1841-1909), known as Coquelin aîné ("Coquelin the Elder") - he was a French actor, and one of the greatest theatrical figures of the age.
