R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980. The band originally consisted of vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry.
R.E.M. is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of alternative rock music, with their unique sound blending elements of jangle pop, folk rock, and post-punk.
The band gained critical acclaim and commercial success with their early albums, including "Murmur" (1983) and "Reckoning" (1984). They achieved mainstream success in the late 1980s and 1990s with albums like "Out of Time" (1991) and "Automatic for the People" (1992).
R.E.M. was known for their introspective lyrics, catchy melodies, and Stipe's distinctive vocal style. The band's music often dealt with political and social issues, as well as themes of love, loss, and alienation.
In 1997, drummer Bill Berry left the band, but R.E.M. continued to release albums and tour as a trio. They officially disbanded in 2011 after over three decades together, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of alternative rock music.
R.E.M. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, solidifying their status as one of the most influential and important bands in music history.
