However, it was as a coach where Rehhagel truly excelled. He began his coaching career in the early 1970s and quickly made a name for himself. In 1983, he achieved his first major success by leading SV Werder Bremen to victory in the Bundesliga. This victory brought them their first-ever Bundesliga title.
Rehhagel's next notable achievement came in 1996 when he took charge of the Greek national team. Under his guidance, Greece experienced unprecedented success, culminating in an unexpected victory at the 2004 UEFA European Championship. This triumph was particularly remarkable as Greece were considered underdogs throughout the tournament.
In addition to his success with Greece, Rehhagel also had a successful club coaching career. He led Kaiserslautern to a Bundesliga title in 1998, making them the first newly promoted team to win the league. He also had stints with Bayern Munich and Hertha BSC, among others.
