Joseph Pope Benedict XVI, formerly known as Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger, was born on April 16, 1927, in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria, Germany. He was the eldest of three children in a devout Catholic family.
After experiencing the horrors of World War II, Ratzinger felt a calling to the priesthood and was ordained in 1951. He soon became a respected theologian and professor, teaching at various universities throughout Germany.
In 1977, Ratzinger was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising by Pope Paul VI. He later became a Cardinal in 1977 and was eventually elected as the 265th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church in 2005, succeeding Pope John Paul II.
During his papacy, Pope Benedict XVI was known for his commitment to preserving traditional Catholic teachings and promoting dialogue with other faiths. He also made significant efforts to address the issue of sexual abuse within the Church.
In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI shocked the world by announcing his resignation, becoming the first Pope to do so in nearly 600 years. He retired to a monastery within Vatican City, where he continues to live a life of prayer and contemplation.
