Jethro Tull was an English agricultural pioneer who lived in the 18th century and is credited with introducing the horse-drawn seed drill and other innovations that revolutionized the farming industry. Born in 1674, Tull was the son of a lawyer who worked in the local court. He was educated at Oxford University, where he studied philosophy and science. After leaving university, Tull worked as a tenant farmer on his father's estate. He was dissatisfied with the methods of farming that were common at the time, which relied heavily on manual labour and used inefficient tools.

In 1701, Tull developed a horse-drawn seed drill which allowed farmers to sow seed in neat, even rows with a minimum of effort. His invention was met with great acclaim and he soon became a sought-after lecturer and consultant. He wrote several books on farming, including Horse-Hoeing Husbandry, which argued for more efficient farming methods. He also advocated for crop rotation and the use of legumes to improve soil fertility.

In 1711, Tull was appointed as a teacher of agriculture at the University of Oxford. In this capacity, he established the world's first agricultural experiment station and developed a series of experiments which demonstrated the benefits of crop rotation. He also developed a system of crop rotation which became known as the 'Tull system'.

In addition to his work on farming, Tull was also a prolific writer and wrote several books on philosophy and science. He was particularly interested in natural history and wrote one of the first comprehensive books on the subject, The Natural History of Agriculture. He also wrote a book on botany, The Botanist's Guide, which provided an introduction to the study of plants.

As well as his own work, Tull was also a great influence on other agricultural pioneers. He was an advocate of scientific agriculture and his ideas were taken up by other innovators of the time, such as Robert Bakewell and Thomas Coke. His influence on modern farming cannot be overstated and he is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of agriculture.

Jethro Tull died in 1741, but his legacy continues to this day. His inventions and ideas revolutionized the farming industry and paved the way for modern agriculture. He will always be remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of agriculture.
