Clark Gable was born on February 1, 1901 in Cadiz, Ohio. He was the only child of William Henry Gable, an oil well driller, and Adeline Hershelman. Gable's mother died when he was just ten months old, and he was raised by his father and stepmother on a farm outside of town.
After high school, Gable worked a variety of odd jobs before finding success as an actor. His big break came in 1931 when he was cast in a supporting role in the film "The Painted Desert." From there, he went on to star in numerous box office hits, including "It Happened One Night," "Gone with the Wind," and "Mutiny on the Bounty."
Gable's rugged good looks and charismatic on-screen presence made him a star of the silver screen. He was known for his deep voice and masculine charm, which earned him the nickname "The King of Hollywood." Gable was also famous for his off-screen romances, including marriages to actresses Josephine Dillon, Maria Franklin Prentiss Lucas Langham, and actress Carole Lombard.
Throughout his career, Gable received three Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, winning for his role in "It Happened One Night." He continued to act in films until his death on November 16, 1960 from a heart attack. Gable's legacy as one of the most iconic actors in Hollywood history lives on today.
