William Howard Taft was born on September 15, 1857 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father, Alphonso Taft, was a prominent politician, lawyer, and businessman, and Taft followed in his footsteps. Taft attended Yale University and then Cincinnati Law School, graduating at the top of his class in 1880. After a successful career as a lawyer, Taft was appointed a federal judge in 1891, and then secretary of war in 1904. In 1908, he was chosen as the Republican nominee for president.

Taft won the election of 1908 and served as president from 1909 to 1913. During his presidency, he oversaw the passage of a variety of important laws, including the Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act and the Sixteenth Amendment, which authorized the federal income tax. He also oversaw the construction of the Panama Canal. Taft was a strong advocate for the conservation of natural resources, and he established the National Parks System. Despite his successes, he was defeated in the 1912 election by Woodrow Wilson.

After leaving the White House, Taft taught constitutional law at Yale Law School for 13 years. In 1921, he was appointed Chief Justice of the United States by President Warren G. Harding, a position he held until 1930. During his tenure, he oversaw landmark decisions such as the famous Scopes Monkey Trial. He also wrote several influential legal opinions, including a ruling on the constitutionality of the income tax.

Taft was an active member of the Republican Party throughout his life, and he was a leading member of the conservative wing of the party. In 1940, he was the Republican nominee for president, but he was defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt. After his defeat, he retired from public life. He died in 1953, and is remembered as one of the most influential presidents in American history.
