Description
Collection of 23 autograph letters signed, in various formats, 1860-1871, in French, this interesting collection begins with a letter dated March 9, 1860, in which Dufour inquires about the future of the Canton of Geneva and the likely outcome concerning Geneva and the Swiss Confederation, highlighting the "major differences leading to irritating debates" (translated) - most of the letters deal with the work of the Committee for the erection of a commemorative monument to celebrate the union of the Canton of Geneva with Switzerland in 1863 (in addition to these various exchanges, there is a letter addressed to Councilor Sarasin indicating the need to postpone the implementation of cartographic measures), all written and signed (in his capacity as President of the implementing committee) in dark ink "G. H. Dufour", mostly with letter folds and a few with mild signs of wear - overall in fine to very fine condition.
Throughout his life, Michel-Édouard Slatkine (1933–2024), a renowned Genevan publisher and collector, championed the book as an embodied object: to be read, preserved, and passed on. In 1964, he founded his own eponymous publishing house, known for reprinting rare and antique works, with a particular focus on the Helvetica series, a tradition that continues to this day. Heir to a rich Genevan book tradition, passed down by his father and grandfather, he cultivated a vast network of knowledge where manuscripts, rare printed works, and scholarly publications engage in dialogue.
Over time, he assembled a charming and eclectic collection of manuscripts, blending literary history, writings by emblematic figures of the 19th and 20th centuries, and humanist curiosity.
