Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He was the son of James and Sara Roosevelt, and the only child of their second marriage. After graduating from law school, Roosevelt moved to New York City and began practicing law.

In 1905, Franklin married Eleanor Roosevelt, the niece of President Theodore Roosevelt. Together, they had six children. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1913, and in 1920 he was the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States. In 1932, he was elected President of the United States, defeating Herbert Hoover in a landslide. During his first term as President, Roosevelt also led the nation through World War II. He worked closely with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin to ensure the Allied victory, and his leadership was instrumental in the creation of the United Nations.
