Profession:
(1965-) American astrophysicist - in 2020, she became the fourth woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
Year of Birth: 1965
Andrea Mia Ghez is an accomplished astrophysicist who is known for her groundbreaking work in the field of galactic center research. Born on June 16, 1965, in New York City, Ghez displayed an interest in science from a young age. She attended the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1987.
Ghez continued her education at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and obtained her Ph.D. in astrophysics in 1992. Her doctoral thesis focused on studying the dynamics of binary stars, which laid the foundation for her future research on the galactic center. After completing her Ph.D., Ghez joined the faculty at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UCLA, where she still holds a position as a professor.
Ghez’s most notable contribution to astrophysics is her work in providing the most compelling evidence for the existence of a supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. Through her use of innovative imaging techniques and sophisticated technologies, Ghez was able to track the movement of stars near the galactic center and observe their interactions with an invisible object with immense gravitational pull.
In recognition of her groundbreaking research, Ghez has been honored with numerous prestigious awards and accolades. She became the fourth woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2020, sharing the prize with Reinhard Genzel for their discoveries regarding the black hole at the center of our galaxy. Ghez is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Outside of her scientific achievements, Ghez is known for her advocacy for women in science and her efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the field. She often gives public lectures and participates in outreach programs to inspire and encourage young people, particularly girls, to pursue careers in STEM fields.
Andrea Mia Ghez’s remarkable contributions to the field of astrophysics have revolutionized our understanding of the universe. Her groundbreaking research on the galactic center and her advocacy for women in science make her an influential figure in the scientific community and a true role model for aspiring scientists.
