Albert Schweitzer was born on January 14, 1875 in Kaysersberg, Alsace, which was part of the German Empire at the time. He was a theologian, musician, philosopher, and physician, best known for his work as a medical missionary in Africa.
After studying theology and philosophy at the University of Strasbourg, Schweitzer went on to pursue a career in music, becoming a renowned organist and interpreter of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. However, he ultimately decided to study medicine in order to be of greater service to humanity.
In 1913, Schweitzer and his wife, Hélène, founded a hospital in the village of Lambarene in French Equatorial Africa (now Gabon).
