"I only delayed my reply, Sir, because I wanted my book to accompany my response. However, the bookseller only sent me my copies of the second edition this Tuesday. I am very pleased to offer you one, with my sincere thanks for the kind article I owe you. I was deeply touched by it, as I should have been, and I had asked the editor of the Album to convey my compliments to you. It is, moreover, a real satisfaction for me to express my gratitude directly to you. If you were not the one assigned the article on the Orientals, it is because I naturally hesitated to burden your kind indulgence with my books. But I am deeply flattered by your friendly request, and I value it particularly, as I do everything that comes to me from a man of wit, heart, and talent.
Yours most cordially, V. Hugo - February 18, 1829"
