Sidney Poitier is an iconic actor, director, and diplomat who has made a lasting impact in the film industry and in the world. He has also directed several films, including Uptown Saturday Night, Stir Crazy, and Ghost Dad. Poitier was the first African American actor to win an Academy Award, and he was the first African American to be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globe Awards.
In addition to his accomplishments in the entertainment industry, Poitier has also done a great deal of humanitarian work. He was a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, as well as a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. He served as a diplomat for the Bahamas from 1997 to 2007 and was appointed as the country's first ambassador to Japan in 2009. He has also served as a goodwill ambassador for the Bahamas and has been an advocate for racial equality and understanding.
