Autograph letter signed, two pages (both sides), 4,25 x 6,5 inch, Pokupsie (Poughkeepsie, New York), 20.11.1856, to Charles Wheaton (general secretary of the Lyceum) - regretting that he cannot find the time to give a lecture, written and signed in black ink "Saml. F. B. Morse", attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a picture of Samuel Morse besides a telegraph (altogether 11,75 x 8,25 inch), with mild signs of wear - in fine to very fine condition.
"Dear Sir,
Your note of yesterday is received, and in reply I would say that however desirous I am to do all in my power to promote the laudable objects of the Lyceum, I find my time so completely occupied with matters of pressing importance that I shall not be able at present to lecture before you; whether I shall ever be able to find the time for preparing a course of Lectures, (which I much desire,) is becoming more and more doubtful, yet should such an opportunity ever be afforded me, I know of no Institution before whom I should delight to lecture more than before the Poughkeepsie Lyceum.
With best wishes for Your success [...] Saml. F. B. Morse"
