Más información sobre la persona
Profession:
(1930-2021) American astronaut who flew the Apollo 11 command module Columbia around the Moon in 1969 while his crewmates, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, made the first crewed landing on the surface
Year of Birth: 1930
Michael Collins was born on October 16, 1890, in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland. He was the third son of Michael John Collins, a farmer and politician, and Mary Anne O'Brien. Collins attended the local national school and later went to the Lisavaird National School. He then moved to London to work as a clerk.
While in London, Collins became involved in the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) and the Gaelic League. He was appointed a member of the Supreme Council of the IRB in 1915 and played a crucial role in the organization of the Easter Rising of 1916. Collins was subsequently imprisoned in Frongoch internment camp but was released after only seven months.
After his release, Collins became a key figure in the struggle for Irish independence. He played a central role in the negotiations leading to the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 and was appointed as the Minister of Finance in the newly formed government of the Irish Free State. As Minister of Finance, Collins strove to stabilize the country's economy and pursued policies aimed at making Ireland economically independent.
Tragically, Collins' commitment to the cause of independence ultimately led to his untimely death. On August 22, 1922, during the Irish Civil War, he was ambushed and shot dead at Béal na Bláth, County Cork. Collins' death was a significant loss to Ireland, as he was seen as a charismatic and dynamic leader who had the potential to shape the nation's future.
Today, Michael Collins is remembered as one of the key figures in the fight for Irish independence. His determination, strategic skills, and dedication to Ireland continue to inspire generations. His legacy lives on as a symbol of the sacrifice and courage required to achieve freedom.
