Kazuo Ishiguro is an internationally renowned novelist and screenwriter who has won numerous awards including the Booker Prize for his novel The Remains of the Day. Born in 1954 in Nagasaki, Japan, Ishiguro’s family moved to the United Kingdom when he was 5 years old. He grew up in Surrey, England, and attended the University of East Anglia, where he earned a degree in English and Philosophy in 1978. He then went on to do a Master’s degree in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia in 1980.
Ishiguro’s first novel, A Pale View of Hills, was published in 1982 and won the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize that same year. He followed this up with An Artist of the Floating World in 1986, which won the Whitbread Book of the Year Award. His 1989 novel, The Remains of the Day, was his most successful work to date, winning the Booker Prize in 1989 and being made into a successful film in 1993.
Ishiguro has also had success as a screenwriter, writing the screenplay for the television adaptation of his novel The Remains of the Day in 1993. He has also written the screenplay for the films The White Countess in 2005 and Never Let Me Go in 2010. His most recent novel, The Buried Giant, was published in 2015.
Ishiguro has received numerous accolades for his work, including a knighthood for services to literature in 2018. He has also won the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France, the Franz Kafka Prize in the Czech Republic, and the Jerusalem Prize in Israel. In addition, he has received honorary doctorates from the University of East Anglia, the University of St Andrews, and the University of Kent.
Ishiguro’s writing style is often described as “elegant and spare,” with his stories focusing on themes of memory, identity, and loss. His work is often set in the past and explores the themes of identity and memory through his characters’ experiences. He has also written extensively about the effects of World War II on the lives of his characters.
Kazuo Ishiguro is one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation and his work has been translated into more than 40 languages. He continues to write and has recently announced his next novel, Klara and the Sun, which is due to be released in March 2021.
