Johnny Cash was born John R. Cash on February 26th, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas. He was born the fourth of seven children to Ray and Carrie Cash. Johnny's mother was a humble homemaker while his father was a cotton farmer and sharecropper. Johnny's family was deeply religious, and his upbringing was strongly influenced by the Baptist Church. Johnny was always musically inclined and by the age of five, he had already written his first song.
Johnny attended Dyess High School, where he met his future wife, Vivian Liberto. After graduating from high school, Johnny enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950. After his service in the Air Force, Johnny moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he worked at an automobile assembly plant and began to pursue his musical career. He soon landed a recording contract with Sun Records and released his debut single, "Cry! Cry! Cry!" in 1955.
Johnny's career was launched with this single, and he quickly became one of the most successful country singers of the time. He released a string of hit singles, including "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues," and he began to tour extensively throughout the United States. During his career, Johnny was known for his trademark look, which included a black suit and a black hat. He was also known for his gravelly voice, which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black."
Throughout his career, Johnny released over 100 albums and sold over 90 million records. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980, and he was awarded numerous awards, including 11 Grammy Awards. In 2003, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Johnny continued to record and tour until his death from complications of diabetes in 2003.
