"This will confirm out mutual agreement that the contract between us dated June 19, 1953 has been cancelled and that neither of us has any obligation to the other with respect to making the screen and/or voice tests of me mentioned in the said agreement, or otherwise."

A member of MGM`s legal department wrote to Deacy in turn:
"Enclosed herewith for your files is duplicate original of letter agreement dated September 14, 1953 between ourselves and James Dean mutually cancelling the contract dated June 19, 1953 under which we were to make tests of Mr. Dean."

During an earlier correspondence in June of that year, Dean outlined an agreement between himself and Loews Inc., then affiliated with MGM, to perform "screen and/or voice tests" without compensation. While it is unclear why the tests were never performed, surviving letters between Jane Deacy, Dean`s agent (1914-2008), and MGM exist trying to release the actor from the agreement, possibly to pursue other opportunities.

James Dean, born on February 8, 1931, in Marion, Indiana, was an American actor who quickly became a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social defiance in the 1950s. His most notable films include "Rebel Without a Cause," "East of Eden," and "Giant."

Dean grew up on a farm in Fairmount, Indiana, where he developed a love for acting at a young age. After graduating high school, he moved to California to pursue his acting career, studying at the prestigious Actors Studio in New York City.

His breakthrough role came in 1955, when he was cast as Jim Stark in "Rebel Without a Cause," a film that captured the angst and rebellion of the post-World War II youth culture. Dean's performance was praised for its raw emotion and vulnerability, earning him a posthumous Academy Award nomination.

Tragically, Dean's promising career was cut short when he died in a car accident on September 30, 1955, at the age of 24. Despite his short life, Dean's legacy as a symbol of youthful rebellion and defiance continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
