Year of Birth: 1917
Herbert Hauptman was born on February 14, 1917, in New York City. He was an American mathematician who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1985, along with Jerome Karle, for their work on the development of direct methods for the determination of crystal structures.
Hauptman attended City College of New York, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1937. He went on to earn his Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in 1939 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Maryland in 1955.
Throughout his career, Hauptman worked at various research institutions, including the Naval Research Laboratory and the Medical Foundation of Buffalo. He also served as president of the American Crystallographic Association and received numerous other awards for his contributions to the field of crystallography.
One of Hauptman's most significant achievements was the development of the theory of direct methods for solving complex crystal structures. This breakthrough revolutionized the field of crystallography and made it possible to determine the structure of molecules with unprecedented accuracy.
Herbert Hauptman continued to work in the field of crystallography until his death on October 23, 2011. His work has had a lasting impact on the scientific community, and he is remembered as a pioneer in the field of crystallography.
Overall, Herbert Hauptman's dedication to the field of crystallography and his groundbreaking research have left a lasting legacy in the world of science and mathematics.
