Matt Groening is an American cartoonist, writer, producer, and voice actor best known for creating the television series The Simpsons and Futurama. He was born on February 15, 1954 in Portland, Oregon to parents Homer and Margaret Groening.
Groening attended Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where he studied philosophy and became involved in the school's newspaper. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in animation.
In 1987, Groening created The Simpsons as a series of shorts for The Tracey Ullman Show. The characters became so popular that they were given their own half-hour series on Fox in 1989. The show has since become the longest-running American sitcom and the longest-running American animated program.
In addition to The Simpsons, Groening created the science fiction comedy series Futurama, which aired from 1999 to 2013. He has also written several comic strips, including Life in Hell, which ran from 1977 to 2012.
Throughout his career, Groening has won numerous awards for his work, including 13 Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and a British Comedy Award. He continues to work on new projects and is considered one of the most influential animators in the industry.
Beyond his professional successes, Groening is known for his quirky sense of humor and unique artistic style. He is married to wife Agustina Picasso and has two children, Homer and Abe. In his free time, he enjoys playing the guitar and collecting vintage comic books.
