Carmen Miranda was born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha in Várzea, Portugal. She was the daughter of Teresa de Miranda and José Maria Pinto da Cunha. Her parents were both born in Várzea, but moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when Carmen was just a baby. Her father worked as a barber and her mother ran a small shop. Carmen, the oldest of four children, grew up in a very musical family. She began singing at an early age and by the time she was twelve, she was an adept performer.

Carmen moved to Rio de Janeiro when she was eighteen to pursue a career in show business. She quickly became a popular singer and dancer at the local clubs. In 1929, she was cast in the revue A Noite do Espetáculo, which was a huge success. Carmem's fame and popularity soon spread throughout Brazil and she went on to become one of the most famous Brazilian singers of the 1930s. She also became a popular radio personality and recorded numerous songs.

In 1939, Carmen moved to the United States and began performing in nightclubs in New York City. She soon became a sensation in the US and was cast in the Broadway musical The Streets of Paris. She went on to appear in several movies, including Busby Berkeley's Dames, Down Argentine Way, and Week-End in Havana. Carmen became an international star and was known for her vibrant costumes, energetic performances, and signature phrase "Ay, ay, ay, ay!".

In addition to her singing and acting career, Carmen was also a popular fashion icon. She designed and wore her own costumes and was a trendsetter in Latin American fashion. She also created her own signature line of cosmetics. Carmen was the first Latin American actress to be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which she received in 1960.
