Jongkind, Johan Barthold

Autograph letter signed, 1 1/2 pages (both sides), 8,25 x 10,5 inch, Rotterdam, 18.06.1858, in French, confidential letter to his merchant Pierre-FirminMartin* - Jongkind thanks for the sending of money and writes about his last painting, written and signed dark ink "Jongkind", attractively mounted (removable) for display with a profile picture of Johan Barthold Jongkind (altogether 16,5 x 11,75 inch), with intersecting letter folds, a few stains, a small tear (in front of the location `Rotterdam`), and scattered mild signs of wear along the edges - in fine to very good condition.

Jongkind thanked him for sending a hundred francs and for his fond memories, "because my good Martin, I really needed it so much I felt upset". He hopes to recover quickly, "and that someday I will find myself among my honest and caring friends.
As I told you, since I sent my last painting I have not yet painted but today I regained my courage to start a painting, it is a Winter effect”. He will send it to Martin as soon as it is finished, probably within a fortnight. He regrets not hearing from his friend Jans, "but I guess he's on a trip." He ends by paying his compliments to Cals (painter) to whom he wishes "some business"

* Jongkind corresponded a lot with Martin, his merchant and confidante. At this time he was going through a difficult phase: he had left Paris to live in Holland, where he would lead a lonely existence until 1860. Martin, who bought almost all of his productions from him and sincerely wanted to help him, remained his only connection to France.
