Gable left school at the age of 17 and headed to Akron, Ohio, where he worked in a tire factory. He then moved to the small town of Ravenna, Ohio, where he worked as a tool dresser at an automobile parts factory. During this time, Gable also found work as an extra in silent films. After working as an extra for a few years, Gable moved to Florida, where he started to get roles in small plays and films. He then moved to Hollywood in 1930, where he started to find more work in films.

Gable's career started to take off after he starred in the 1932 film Red Dust. He then had a string of successful films, including It Happened One Night, Mutiny on the Bounty, and San Francisco. His biggest success was in Gone With the Wind, where he played the iconic role of Rhett Butler.
