Year of Birth: 1883
Walter Gropius was a German architect and founder of the Bauhaus School, which revolutionized design and architecture in the 20th century. Born in Berlin in 1883, Gropius studied architecture in Munich and worked as an apprentice for Peter Behrens before opening his own practice in 1910.
Gropius's early work was influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement, but he quickly embraced the modernist principles of simplicity, functionality, and mass production. In 1919, he founded the Bauhaus School in Weimar, which became a laboratory for modern design and a breeding ground for some of the most influential artists and architects of the time.
Despite facing criticism and political pressure from the Nazis, Gropius continued to promote modernism and international style architecture. In 1937, he emigrated to the United States and became the head of the architecture department at Harvard University.
His impact on modern architecture cannot be overstated, as his theories and designs have influenced generations of architects and designers. Gropius's legacy lives on through the iconic buildings he designed, such as the Fagus Factory and the Bauhaus School building in Dessau.
Walter Gropius passed away in 1969, but his work continues to inspire and influence the world of architecture and design to this day.
