Lorenz's contributions to the field included the concept of imprinting, in which young animals form a strong bond with the first object they see, a theory he developed through his studies of ducklings.

Throughout his career, Lorenz was a prominent figure in the scientific community, serving as the director of the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology in Seewiesen, Germany.
