Jasper Johns is an American painter, sculptor, printmaker, and lithographer. He is one of the most influential Pop and Minimalist artists of the 20th century. Johns was born in Augusta, Georgia, on May 15, 1930. He was raised in Allendale, South Carolina, and attended the University of South Carolina for two years before transferring to the Parsons School of Design in New York in 1948.
Johns' painting style is often characterized as a combination of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. His works were often composed of a variety of materials, such as oil paint, encaustic, and collage. Often times, he would combine representational and abstract elements in his compositions. Johns was also known for his printmaking, which he often used to explore the relationship between the two-dimensional image and the three-dimensional object.
Johns first gained recognition in the late 1950s, when he began to exhibit his works. His first solo show was in 1958 at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York and was a great success. In 1960, Johns was awarded the International Prize for painting at the Venice Biennale. The following year, he was awarded the first of four Guggenheim Fellowships.
Throughout his career, Johns has continued to explore the relationship between painting and sculpture, as well as the relationship between abstraction and representation. He has also been a major influence on artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol. In addition to his painting, Johns has also created a number of sculptures, prints, and lithographs.
In 1994, Johns was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton. In 2007, he was selected as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. He has also been honored with retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., among others.
Today, Johns' works can be found in major museums and galleries around the world. His influence on 20th-century art is undeniable and his works remain highly sought-after by art collectors and enthusiasts alike.
