Hannibal Hamlin was born on August 27, 1809, in Paris, Maine. He was the son of Cyrus Hamlin, a farmer, and Anna Livermore. He attended Hebron Academy and later studied law in his brother's office before being admitted to the bar in 1833.

Hamlin started his political career as a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1836, and later served in the Maine State Senate. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1843, where he served until 1847. In 1861, he became the Vice President of the United States under President Abraham Lincoln.

During his time as Vice President, Hamlin was a strong supporter of abolition and worked to promote civil rights for all Americans. He was known for his efforts to support the Union during the Civil War and his advocacy for the Emancipation Proclamation.

After his term as Vice President, Hamlin served as a U.S. Senator from Maine from 1869 to 1881. He later became the U.S. Minister to Spain before retiring from public office. Hamlin passed away on July 4, 1891, in Bangor, Maine.
