Edmund Gwenn was a British actor who enjoyed a long and successful Hollywood career. He was born in Wandsworth, London in 1877, and was the second of three sons. He was educated in London, and after completing his studies, began working in the theater. He made his stage debut in 1897, and over the next several years he appeared in several plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest.
In the early 1900s, Gwenn moved to the United States and began appearing in films. He made his film debut in 1914, and over the next two decades he appeared in over 50 films. He was well-known for his roles in comedy films, including The Milky Way (1936), The Awful Truth (1937), and Miracle on 34th Street (1947).
In addition to his film work, Gwenn also enjoyed success on the stage. He made his Broadway debut in 1919, and over the next several decades he appeared in a number of plays, including The Barretts of Wimpole Street and The Man Who Came to Dinner. He also appeared in television shows and radio programs, and wrote several plays.
Gwenn was a prolific actor, and he won numerous awards for his work. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Miracle on 34th Street (1947), and he also received a Tony Award for his performance in The Man Who Came to Dinner (1955). He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in The Farmer’s Daughter (1947).
Gwenn continued to act until his death in 1959. He was 81 years old, and was survived by his wife, three children, and several grandchildren. He was buried in Brompton Cemetery in London.
