Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanubandh, commonly known as Prince Bira, was born on 15 July 1914 in Bangkok, Thailand. He was a member of the Thai Royal Family and the grandson of King Mongkut of Siam, famously portrayed in the musical "The King and I."
Prince Bira developed a passion for motorsports at a young age and began racing in Europe in the 1930s. He quickly gained a reputation for his skill and flamboyant racing style, earning the nickname "Prince Chula's Racing Prince."
During his career, Bira drove for various teams, including Maserati and ERA, and achieved success in Grand Prix racing. He won several races and stood on the podium multiple times, showcasing his talent and dedication to the sport.
Aside from racing, Prince Bira was also an accomplished pilot, having served in the Royal Thai Air Force during World War II. He later became a jet pilot and continued to pursue his passion for aviation throughout his life.
Prince Bira's racing career came to an end in the early 1950s, but he remained involved in motorsports as a team owner and mentor to young drivers. He passed away on 23 December 1985, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of Thailand's most celebrated racing drivers.
