Angelina Jolie is an American award-winning actress, filmmaker, and humanitarian. She is known for her humanitarian efforts as well as her acting career, which has spanned over two decades. She has won numerous awards, including an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. Jolie is also a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.

Jolie was born Angelina Jolie Voight on June 4, 1975, in Los Angeles, California, to actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. She was named after her late paternal grandmother, Angelina Voight. Jolie's parents separated when she was one year old. Her mother raised her and her brother, James Haven, with help from their close-knit extended family. After graduating from high school, Jolie attended New York University. She dropped out after one semester to pursue a career in acting.

Jolie's first major film role was in the 1993 movie Cyborg 2, which was followed by a string of other roles in films such as Hackers (1995), Foxfire (1996) and George Wallace (1997). In 1999, Jolie starred in the blockbuster movie, The Bone Collector, which earned her critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. In 2001, Jolie starred in the critically-acclaimed Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, which grossed over $400 million worldwide. She followed that up with a series of other successful films, including Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Wanted (2008), and Salt (2010).

Jolie is also known for her humanitarian work. In 2001, she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). She has since visited refugee camps and conflict zones around the world, and has made numerous public appearances to speak out on behalf of refugees. In 2012, she was appointed as the Special Envoy for UNHCR, a position she held until 2017.

In addition to her acting career and humanitarian work, Jolie has also directed and produced several films, including In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011) and Unbroken (2014).
