Year of Birth: 1883
Walter Gropius was a renowned German architect and a pioneer of modernist architecture. He was born in Berlin in 1883, into a family of architects and designers. Gropius studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich before moving on to work in the offices of Peter Behrens, another influential architect of the time.
In 1919, Gropius founded the Bauhaus School in Weimar, which would become one of the most influential art schools of the 20th century. The school combined crafts and fine arts with an emphasis on functionality and modern design principles. Gropius served as the director of the Bauhaus until 1928, when political pressure forced the school to move to Berlin.
After leaving the Bauhaus, Gropius continued to work as an architect, designing buildings that were characterized by their clean lines, open spaces, and innovative use of materials. Some of his most famous works include the Fagus Factory, the Bauhaus building in Dessau, and the Harvard Graduate Center in the United States.
Gropius emigrated to the United States in 1937, where he became a professor at Harvard University and continued to influence generations of architects with his visionary ideas. He passed away in 1969, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and a lasting impact on the world of architecture.
