Victor Hugo Autograph

Autograph letter signed, one page - addressed and stamped to the reverse of an conjoined sheet, 5,25 x 7,75 inch, 25.05.1848, in French, to Désiré Laverdant - sending of his electoral profession of faith*, written and signed in black ink "Victor Hugo", attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a photograph, shows Hugo seated in a chair (altogether 11,75 x 8,25 inch), with intersecting letter folds, mild creasing, and scattered mild signs of wear to the edges - in fine condition.

"Je vous envoyer, monsieur [...] une lettre que j'envoie aux électeurs.
Elle paraîtra demain. Si vous croyez qu'elle convienne à La Démocratie pacifi que, je vous en fais juge et serai charmé de la lire dans le journal où vous écrivez et dont j'ai souvent applaudi l'honnêteté sérieuse et intelligente. Il me semble que c'est l'heure pour tous les hommes de coeur et de probité de s'unir dans la commune pensée du bien public [...]

Translated:

"I send you, monsieur [...] a letter which I am sending to the voters.
It will appear tomorrow. If you think it suits La Démocratie pacific, I will make you judge of it and will be delighted to read it in the journal where you write and whose serious and intelligent honesty I have often applauded. It seems to me that it is time for all men of heart and probity to unite in the common thought of the public good. [...]

* On May 26, 1848, Hugo displayed his profession of faith to fellow citizens, for the complementary elections organized after the day of May 15 and the arrests or the flight of certain demonstrators such as Barbès, Raspail or Blanqui.
Hugo was elected on June 5th with nearly 2,500 votes more than Louis-Napoleon
Bonaparte.
