Biography (AI generated)

Victor Hugo was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist who is considered one of the greatest French writers of all time. Born on February 26, 1802 in Besançon, France, Hugo grew up in a family of distinguished royalists and artists. His mother was a devoted Catholic and his father was a general in Napoleon's army, giving him a unique upbringing that would greatly influence his works.

Hugo first gained literary acclaim with his poetry, winning a prestigious French poetry prize at the age of 20. He soon turned his attention to writing novels, including classics such as "Les Misérables" and "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame". These works are known for their powerful themes of social justice, love, and redemption.

Throughout his life, Hugo was heavily involved in politics and used his writing as a platform to advocate for his beliefs. He was a staunch supporter of liberalism and democracy, and was exiled from France for his political views during the reign of Napoleon III. Despite this, Hugo continued to write and produce influential works from his exile in Guernsey.

Victor Hugo's impact on French literature cannot be overstated. His works continue to be studied and celebrated to this day, and his contributions to the Romantic movement have left a lasting legacy. Hugo died on May 22, 1885 in Paris, France, but his influence lives on through his timeless writing.
