Jean-Paul Sartre Autograph

Autograph letter signed, one page, 8,25 x 10,5 inch, May 10 [1951], in French, to Louis Jouvet (1887-1951, French actor, theatre director and filmmaker) - concerning Sartre`s play `The Devil and the Good Lord` (French: `Le Diable et le Bon Dieu`, 1951), written and signed in blue ink "JP Sartre", attractively mounted (removable) for display with a photograph, shows Jean-Paul Sartre in a close-up portrait (altogether 16,5 x 11,75 inch), with very mild signs of wear - in nearly very fine condition.

Cau m`a rapporté votre conversation avec lui. Je tiens a vous dire que je suis en total disaccord avec vous. Cette pièce ne supporte plus de coupes et je n`en ferai plus. Si elle est injouable, on ne la jouera pas, voila tout. Je sais que vous ne voulez, en cette affaire, que le mieux o tous, mais comprenez, de votre coté, que les dimensions de la pièce correspondent à des intentions précises de ma part et que je préfère obandonner plutôt que de la massacrer. [...]

Cau told me about your conversation with him. I must tell you that I completely disagree with you. This play cannot withstand any more cuts, and I will not make any more. If it is unplayable, it will not be performed, that's all. I know that in this matter you only want what is best for everyone, but please understand that the dimensions of the play correspond to specific intentions on my part, and that I prefer to abandon it rather than butcher it. Accompanied by an interesting autograph letter signed from Simone Berriau (1896-1984, French actress and director of the Antoine Theatre in Paris), six pages (on three sheets), about 6 x 8 inch, in French, to Sartre - concerning rehearsals for the play, asking him to trust Louis Jouvet, written and signed in pencil & blue ink "S Berriau", with browning and tears along the top edge (text unaffected), from being torn from a writing pad - in fine condition.
