Profession:
(1942-2011) commonly known as Colonel Gaddafi, was a Libyan revolutionary, politician and political theorist.
Year of Birth: 1942
Muammar el-Gaddafi was a Libyan revolutionary and politician who ruled Libya for over four decades. He was born on June 7, 1942, in a Bedouin tent in the desert near Sirte, Libya.
Gaddafi came to power in Libya in 1969, after leading a coup against King Idris. He established a system of government called the Jamahiriya, which he described as a form of direct democracy, although in reality, he held absolute power.
During his rule, Gaddafi implemented various social and economic reforms, including the redistribution of oil wealth to the Libyan people. He also pursued a pan-Arab nationalist agenda, advocating for the unification of all Arab countries into a single nation.
Internationally, Gaddafi was known for his confrontational foreign policy and support for various militant groups. He was implicated in numerous terrorist attacks, including the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.
In 2011, during the Arab Spring uprisings, Gaddafi's regime was overthrown by rebel forces supported by NATO airstrikes. He was captured and killed in his hometown of Sirte on October 20, 2011.
Gaddafi's legacy remains controversial, with some viewing him as a hero who stood up to Western imperialism, while others see him as a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people.
