Leonard Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet, and novelist. He was born in Montreal, Quebec on September 21, 1934. He was raised in an observant Jewish family, and began writing poetry at the age of 13. Cohen attended McGill University, where he studied literature and music. After graduating from McGill, he moved to Greece, where he spent a year living on the island of Hydra.

Cohen began his musical career in the 1960s, releasing his debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen, in 1967. The album featured the song "Suzanne," which became one of Cohen's most famous songs and earned him critical acclaim. In 1969, Cohen released his second album, Songs from a Room, which featured the song "Bird on the Wire," another of his most famous songs.

In the 1970s, Cohen released several more albums, including Songs of Love and Hate, Death of a Ladies' Man, and Various Positions. He also wrote and recorded the song "Hallelujah," which has become one of his most covered and celebrated songs. In the 1980s, Cohen released I'm Your Man, which featured the song "First We Take Manhattan."

In addition to his music career, Cohen was also a successful poet and novelist. His first book of poetry, Let Us Compare Mythologies, was published in 1956. He also wrote the novels Beautiful Losers and The Favourite Game, as well as several volumes of poetry. Cohen was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1991, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

Cohen continued to record and perform throughout the 2000s and 2010s. He released his final album, You Want it Darker, in 2016, shortly before his death.
