Formed in San Francisco in 1965, Jefferson Airplane was one of the pioneering bands of the counterculture era. The original lineup included vocalist Marty Balin, guitarist Paul Kantner, bassist Jack Casady, drummer Skip Spence, and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. They quickly gained a following on the psychedelic music scene, and soon became one of the most popular and influential rock bands of the 1960s.

The band's debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, was released in 1966 and featured the hit single "It's No Secret". They followed it up with Surrealistic Pillow in 1967, which featured the classic hits "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love". This album established them as one of the leading lights of the psychedelic music scene, and would be their breakthrough album.

In 1968, the band released their third album, Crown of Creation, which featured the hit single "Lather". They also embarked on a tour of the United States and Europe to promote the album. This tour was a major success and further increased their popularity. They followed up with the album Volunteers in 1969, which featured the hit single "Volunteers".

The band went through several lineup changes in the 1970s, but continued to record and tour. They released a number of albums, including Long John Silver (1972), Bark (1971), and Dragon Fly (1974). In 1975, vocalist Grace Slick replaced Marty Balin and the band released their final album, Winds of Change.

Jefferson Airplane disbanded in 1972, but they reunited in 1989 for a reunion tour. They released a live album, Jefferson Airplane Loves You, and toured again in 1996. The band's legacy continues to this day, and their music is still highly regarded and influential.

Jefferson Airplane was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and their influence can still be heard in today's music. Their pioneering sound helped shape the sound of the 1960s and beyond, and their timeless songs remain popular today.
