Sauvage completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Strasbourg, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree in Science in 1967. Continuing his education at the same institution, he then earned his PhD in Chemistry in 1971. Following the completion of his doctoral studies, Sauvage pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
In 1974, Sauvage began his academic career as an assistant professor at Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, where he eventually became a full professor in 1983.
