"The news from France and Vienna that I received from you on September 29 engage me to thank you and attest of my gratitude for your attention, and now I pray that God keeps you in his holy and dignified protection.
   Frederic.
At Potsdam
the 4th of October 1781"

The letter is written two years after the War of Bavarian Succession, Frederick's final war against the Austrian rulers. Joseph II, Archduke of Austria laid claim on the Duchy of Bavaria to strengthen his family's political influence while Frederick along with other interested sovereigns wished to maintain the balance of power. Following the low scale war, Frederick began to withdraw from court and political life, preferring the solitude of Sanssouci palace in Potsdam. Frederic was entombed in Potsdam after his death in 1786.
