Profession:
(1865-1937) German general, politician and military theorist. He achieved fame during World War I for his central role in the German victories at Liège and Tannenberg in 1914.
Year of Birth: 1865
Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff was a prominent German military and political leader during World War I. He was born on April 9th, 1865 in Kruszewnia, Germany, to a Prussian family of minor nobility. As a young man, Ludendorff was highly ambitious and received a top-notch education, graduating from the prestigious Cadet Corps in 1883. He went on to serve in various positions in the Prussian army, eventually becoming a General during World War I.
Ludendorff was a major influence in the German war effort during WWI, helping to develop and implement strategic plans that initially had great success. He was a driving force in the German offensives of 1914 and 1915, and was responsible for the successful occupation of the Russian Baltic territories in 1917. Ludendorff also played a role in the 1918 Spring Offensive, although the offensive ultimately failed.
Ludendorff's success during WWI earned him the respect of Kaiser Wilhelm II, and he was appointed Quartermaster General of the German Army in 1916. He held this position until 1918, when he resigned due to political differences with the Kaiser. After his resignation, Ludendorff became involved in right-wing politics, and was even elected to the Weimar National Assembly in 1919.
Despite his successful military career, Ludendorff's political ambitions were largely thwarted. He was a vocal opponent of the Versailles Treaty, and in 1923, he even attempted a coup against the German government, known as the Kapp Putsch. The coup failed, and Ludendorff was forced to flee the country. He eventually returned to Germany and lived out his life in relative obscurity.
Ludendorff died on December 20th, 1937 in Munich, Germany. Although his political career was largely unsuccessful, his contributions to the German war effort during WWI are undeniable. He was a masterful strategist, and his tactics were largely responsible for the early successes of the German army. Ludendorff's legacy is still felt today, as he is remembered as one of the most influential military leaders of the 20th century.
