Feringa completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry at the University of Groningen in 1974, and continued his education at the same institution, earning his Ph.D. degree in 1978. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, before returning to the Netherlands to join the faculty of the University of Groningen as a lecturer in 1984.

In 1999, he achieved a major breakthrough when he synthesized the world's first molecular motor, a minute synthetic molecule capable of rotating continuously in one direction under the influence of light.
