In 1898, at the invitation of the Emperor, Bell traveled with his family to Japan, arriving at Yokohama on October 5. During their three-month stay, Bell and family visited the Emperor and various destinations in Nikko, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nagasaki and Tokyo. Eliza Catherine Scidmore was the mother of Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore (1856-1928), who was the first female board member of the National Geographic Society. Bell was the Society`s second president.

Alexander Graham Bell is one of the world's most renowned inventors and discoverers. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on March 3, 1847. He was the son of a professor of speech elocution and a specialist in correcting speech impairments. His mother was also a pianist and composer.
Bell's family moved to Canada in 1870 and two years later, he moved to the United States. In 1872, he opened a school of vocal physiology in Boston, Massachusetts. He also taught at Boston University and became fascinated with the idea of transmitting sound by electricity. His invention of the telephone in 1876 is perhaps his most famous accomplishment.
Bell was granted the first U.S. patent for the telephone and he went on to found the Bell Telephone Company in 1877. He also founded the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Geographic Society. Over the course of his life, he received numerous honors and awards, including the Volta Prize and the French Legion of Honor.
Bell also carried out numerous experiments in other areas, including aeronautics, hydrofoils, and photophone. The photophone was an invention that used light to transmit sound. He also conducted groundbreaking work in the field of Visible Speech, a system of phonetic symbols used to teach the deaf to speak. His research in this field made a tremendous impact on deaf education.
Bell spent much of his later life working on various projects, including the development of the iron lung. He died in 1922 and was buried at the family estate in Nova Scotia, Canada. He left a legacy of innovation and imagination that has been an inspiration to generations of inventors and scientists.
