Autograph letter signed, one page (ruled paper), 5 x 7,5 inch, `Grand Hotel LTD - Yokohama` letterhead, (Yokohama), 31.10.1898, to Eliza Catherine Scidmore - concerning an invitation, written and signed in black ink "Alexander Graham Bell", attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a photograph, shows Alexander Graham Bell in a chest-up portrait (altogether 11,75 x 8,25 inch), with intersecting letter folds, a few small stains and mild creases to the edges - in fine condition.

In 1898, at the invitation of the Emperor, Bell traveled with his family to Japan, arriving at Yokohama on October 5. During their three-month stay, Bell and family visited the Emperor and various destinations in Nikko, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nagasaki and Tokyo. Eliza Catherine Scidmore was the mother of Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore (1856-1928), who was the first female board member of the National Geographic Society. Bell was the Society`s second president.
